He doesn't make my favorite films (I'm one of those people that hated Birdman, and while The Revenant was far better than I expected, it didn't make any of my year-end lists), but Iñárritu certainly has a way of crafting films that really stick with you. It's been several months now and, like Babel 13 years ago, it still weighs on me. But of all the films I saw it's the one I can't get out of my head.
EL CHIVO AMORES PERROS MOVIE
I saw it at a Mexican film festival at my local indie-it wasn't my favorite movie that I saw (definitely Y Tu Mama Tambien, an all-time favorite), but I still enjoyed it. I liked The Departed much more and that's the one I was rooting for that year, but The Departed, much as I still enjoy it, kind of came and went while Babel lingered.įast forward 13 years and I finally see Amores Perros. But I found that my mind just kept going back to it and I couldn't really shake it. I watched it with my family and none of is loved it-a bit too heavy for our tastes at the time. I was 14 when it came out and it was the first time I was making an effort to see the Oscar nominated movies. The first movie I can remember just really sticking with me-regardless of how much I actually liked it-for weeks after seeing it was Babel. I’ll link to a video I did on this topic if you want a more in-depth analysis:Īmores Perros (2000) The Three Stages of Love Como si 'Amores perros' tuviera el mismo efecto que el accidente que le sirve de ncleo, en l se encuentran felizmente juntos los primeros pasos de muchas figuras que dominaran el cine. If anyone could provide insight, that would be greatly appreciated. What does it have to contribute thematically? I honestly don’t know. This is what the characters of Amores Perros want, and it’s a virtue they need to learn.īeyond creating tension and intrigue, I still can’t understand why inarritu uses a non-linear structure.
We see this in how Octavio is idealizing the future him and Susana could have, the fall of the relationship between Daniel and Valeria, and the regret of El Chivo.Īnother thing that struck me was the use of dogs as a motif for unconditional love dogs embody this because they love their owner no matter what. These are idealization, realization, and regret. In my opinion, the three stories each represent a stage of love. I forgot about the film until I recently went back to really understand the filmic techniques and gain a greater appreciation for this film. The non-linear structure tying the three stories seemed more gimmicky than anything. Amores Perros was a film, that when I saw it, confused me.
